What is your role at Tough Mudder?

Tough Mudder Village/Finish Line MC

How did you come to be working at Tough Mudder?

My best mate Simon, (who is also the Tough Mudder Start Line MC) auditioned for the role via video (which we filmed in some random park in Caulfield), and he got the job.

He did the first ever TM in Phillip Island, told me about it and I immediately I wanted to sign up to run the next event. Little did I know that they would need another MC and I would be flown to Sydney to join TM for the second ever Australian event. (No audition for me! haha)

I haven’t missed a TM in over 5 years and love it every time!

Give us an insiders perspective on the Tough mudder course/world. What do you know that we don’t? Have you got any hot tips for future mudders?

The lead up and preparation to any Tough Mudder event is amazing. So much time taken to make sure the event for the weekend is absolutely top shelf for every Mudder getting on the course, and for the spectators.

The TM family is extremely tight as friends and collegues, work hard and enjoy the jobs we do… One of the perks is we get to have some fun, usually on the Thursday/Friday leading up to the weekend and we try out the obstacles.

Tip for future Mudders?

First timers: Wear strong grip shoes, strap up those ankles, wear compression/quick dry gear, run with friends for support, help out your fellow Mudders and just enjoy every second of it. It’s a bucket list box tick for sure!!

What 3 things do we need to know, to know the ‘real’ you?

  1. When I’m not talking on a microphone, I wear a suit and the boss of a big theatre in the city. It’s very serious, so I always love to get out in the mud and cut loose!
  2. I’m a talker! I guess that’s why I’m an MC.  I’ll tell you a story anytime. Even if you’ve heard it before, I’ll tell you it again. Just ask! haha!
  3. I once accidentally high fived Larry Emdur. I was walking past him and waved but he went up for the hand. It was quite a moment.

If you had a superpower what would it be?

Sounds boring but power of flight. Airports and planes do my head in!!!

What is your favourite obstacle?

This may sound really weird but Arctic Enema. I always thought it would be so easy but I ran my first TM in Adelaide I finally got to do it.

Words can’t describe that feeling when you hit that ice water! It’s a mixture of your brain trying to work what’s going on and your body trying to slow down, but trying to go forward to get out.  I’ve never felt so alive when I got out of it. Unreal!!!

Most memorable experience at TM?

We had a proposal on the finish line. She said yes, but she looked pretty wrecked so hope it worked out in the end. Also I don’t know where he was hiding that ring for 20km???

What does your average day look like?

At Tough Mudder, I’m the first voice you’ll hear. I usually walk around the village chatting to nervous Mudders, asking our Legionnaires for tips, making sure everyone gets to the bag drop, warm up and start line on time, and just generally try to be funny. Once the Mudders are heading out and the first wave start heading back, I bounce between the TM Village, running a few comps with our sponsors for those with any energy left, and double MC with Simon on the finish line to welcome back our Mudders. It’s always the big dudes that wanna hug at the finish line!!
