Life has obstacles and you have to get around them!

“Life has obstacles and you have to get around them!”

Shane has encountered his fair share of obstacles in his life. His experience with anxiety and depression presented some of the toughest obstacles – and with the support of others he got through them.

“To me obstacle courses are similar to life. There are always challenges and obstacles in both and you have to find a way to get over it, get around it, go through it, under it or even smash through it. Every obstacle can be worked through,” Shane said.

Speaking up and seeking support at the right time is essential. Shane is passionate about sharing his story and encouraging everyone to seek support, advice and treatment. He joined the beyondblue Speakers Bureau to share his story and inspire others to overcome the obstacles in their life.

To raise funds and awareness for beyondblue, Shane took up the physical challenges, including running and obstacle races which ignited his passion for fitness. The physical and mental challenge proved to be an incredibly rewarding thing that changed his life.

“It was something I never thought I could do and it brought me to tears. It was the moment I realised, I could do anything I put my mind to – even with a mental health condition.”
His passion for fitness translated a personal training business, where Shane is helping people feel physically better, helping them be more aware of their mental health and starting conversations that help reduce the stigma associated with anxiety, depression and suicide.

“I have 8 clients doing Tough Mudder this year and they are sensational. They come from all backgrounds and some have experience of a mental health condition. It’s amazing to see them bond together. I watched them last year and the teamwork was amazing to witness,” Shane said.

We believe mental health is important too – Tough Mudder is proud to partner with beyondblue to help make a difference to mental health in Australia.

beyondblue is a national organisation that works to promote good mental health, create change to protect everyone’s mental health and improve the lives of individuals, families and communities affected by anxiety, depression and suicide.

We encourage every Tough Mudder participant to register a fundraising page and raise some serious funds for beyondblue. Every dollar you raise will help to fund services like the beyondblue 24/7 Support Service, as well as tools and resources that are available to anyone in Australia, whatever their age and wherever they live.

Registering is simple – click here to create your fundraising page. Then share your page URL with your friends, family and colleagues, through email or social media, and ask them to donate! Every donation over $2 is tax deductible and donors are automatically emailed a tax-deductible receipt. Too easy!

Our thanks to Shane for being a fantastic advocate for good mental health and good luck taking on the Tough Mudder course this year.

It’s not too late to sign up for Tough Mudder 2017, so rally a few mates, and put yourself to the test!

We’ll meet you in the mud.
