Probably the toughest crew on the planet: Ben

Ever wondered who are the crazy kids that work behind the scenes pulling together the best event on the planet? We’re a small, hardworking team who live and breathe Tough Mudder (yep, we’ve all drunk the Kool-Aid).

It’s safe to say we’re all a little bit crazy, but as someone once said, it’s better to be crazy than boring!

So let’s meet the team: Operations Director, Ben

What is your role at Tough Mudder? Overseeing all the Operational Aspects of the Tough Mudder Events in Australia

How did you come to be working at Tough Mudder? I did a University Presentation and presenting after me was the guy in charge of recruiting for a new Tough Mudder Australia office. We had a mutual friend, grabbed a coffee, he told me about the direction of Tough Mudder and then offered me a job. That was nearly 4 years ago now.

Give us an insiders perspective on the Tough Mudder course/world. What do you know that we don’t? Have you got any hot tips for future mudders?

I think there are a lot of myths around Tough Mudder like you have to be super fit or you have to have a team or that it’s a cult. The reality is that doing a Tough Mudder is just about being a kid again and being able to crawl in mud and climb things. Doing it with mates or family is great, but even if you don’t start the course with a team, I can guarantee you will finish with one. You definitely don’t need to be super fit to do Tough Mudder either. Don’t get me wrong – it’s going to be a long day if you have never done anything like it and have done no training, but I love that it’s not timed and it’s not a race – so just enjoy it.

What 3 things do we need to know, to know the ‘real’ you? That is a DEEP question…. I don’t know where to start. I think I have a little OCD (maybe more than a little), I’m a bit of a Cinephile and I’m actually a big softie when you get to know me….

If you had a superpower what would it be? I don’t know what it’s called, but moving things with my mind. (Editors note: It’s telekinesis)

What is your favourite obstacle? Arctic Enema. (The original was great, but Rebirth is next level good!)

Most memorable experience at TM? 2013 Tough Mudder Sunshine Coast…. 75mm of rain. One of the hardest events I’ve ever worked but very rewarding as well.

What does your average day look like? Most of the time it’s spent looking at budgets and emails, but I get to spend a fair amount of time dealing with staff and contractors, building relationships. But the best days are getting muddy onsite during the event!
